Carpentry as Contact Sport (Updated: 2009-05-04)

Posted in General with tags , , on April 27, 2009 by Steven

Yes, I haven’t posted to the blog in a long time. I am worthless and weak. To make up for my short comings, I’m posting a few pictures from my weekend experience in contact carpentry.

How it all began… I have a new previously loved desk that I moved into my office replacing the two press wood banquet tables I’ve been using as a desk since moving into this house. Once getting the desk into the office, which itself was a Trial of Hercules, and after a couple of weeks I decided that the right hand return would make a great work bench space. I started valiantly, measuring the desktop, drew out some plans, compared them to the wood I had left over and purchasing additional supplies.

(Warning, photos below the break.)

Illustrate Me, Man!

Happy 88th birthday to a great author, Ray Bradbury.

And Now for Something Completely Different, Dinner.

So I made vague reference to being a well rounded geek in my Opening Salvo and About pages. Well here’s a little something I’d like to share with the world in general another of my interests, food.

Here’s a recipe that I’ve been playing with for a few years for vegetarian picadillo. If you aren’t familiar with picadillo, here’s what Wikipedia has to say:

Picadillo is a dish mainly consisting of ground beef typically found in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.

Now, I’m a bit of a foodie, so some of the things I put in are different from others, but the beauty of picadillo is the versatility of the recipe.

Run, It’s a Giant Rubber Regator!

Posted in Web with tags , , on July 3, 2008 by Steven

Regator is a neat new social information aggrigator, *nudge*nudge* gator get it, site. At the moment, it’s in private beta but if you look around you may find some invites left *cough* techcrunch *cough*cough* readwriteweb. Anyhow, back to the site, it’s a neat implementation of the social news sites like Digg or Slashdot but focusing on blogs instead of general web sites. Now, the line can be fuzzy at times with blog sites just commenting on something from a web site, but that doesn’t take away from Regator, just points to something about the state of blogging today.

It’s all Music to My Ears

So I was reading Mashable and this article talking about Jamendo came up, and it reminded me, I haven’t been to that site in a while.

Logo for Jamendo

If you’ve never heard of it, Jamendo is an all Creative Commons music site. It’s interesting in that a majority of the artists are European, since Jamendo is based in Luxembourg, and you see how musical trends are different in other countries.

No Need in Releasing the Hounds on Firefox3 RC1

Posted in Software, Technology with tags , , on May 30, 2008 by Steven
So I, like many others, installed Firefox 3 RC1 this last Friday. I have to say, it works pretty well. I already knew most of my add-ons wouldn’t work, but I went ahead anyway.
Update:
So far so good. I haven’t have the Flash crashing issues reported by others, but I use the Flashblock add-on to stop the auto-playing of Flash elements. The memory is still a little high when I have a bunch of tabs open, but the browser is much more stable with those tabs open. I’ve had to reboot the machine because of other issues much more than I’ve had the browser outright crash on me.

Trent Reznor’s Newest Freebie

Posted in Music, Pop Culture with tags , , , on May 8, 2008 by Steven

I recently read about newest free release from Nine Inch Nails, ‘The Slip’, and took the plunge. I figured for an investment of a little bandwidth, I would download it and take a listen and I have to say, I don’t hate it. I haven’t really paid much attention to NiN since about the second album, yeah I’m showing my age, when Mr. Reznor was still a one man band and playing small venues, including ones in Ybor City.
